Hugh Bonneville's "gripping" British crime thriller is the Netflix movie to watch tonight

If you already have a Netflix subscription and want to watch a British crime thriller as soon as possible, then you're in luck, as Digital Spy has a quality recommendation to satisfy all your bingeing needs.

I Came By is a film from writer-director Babak Anvari, with the plot following a young graffiti artist called Tony Nealey. With a politically motivated disposition, he often breaks into the homes of wealthy individuals and leaves a message.

His latest target is Sir Hector Blake, a wealthy judge who Tony believes to be more conservative than his public persona affords him. It turns out, however, that Hector may harbour an altogether more sinister secret.

What did critics say about I Came By?

The crime thriller was generally liked by critics, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting a solid approval rating of 69% from 42 reviews. Though the narrative was criticised by some, Bonneville's performance was widely praised.

In Digital Spy's three-star review of the film, we wrote: "You might assume where the movie is going, yet from the moment Anvari blindsides you for the first time, you'll have no idea what's going to happen."

"It doesn't always work, but an unexpected, perfectly pitched bad-guy turn from national treasure Hugh Bonneville makes I Came By just about worth stopping by for," opined Empire Magazine, while The Upcoming called it "gripping".

"There's more to it than meets the eye, and its subtle boldness becomes apparent in retrospect," wrote Little White Lies, while Los Angeles Times described it as a "twisty suspense film barbed with social commentary".

RogertEbert.com was also full of praise, writing: "There are some fun performances and clever themes in I Came By, two things that elevate it above a lot of the product coming out of the Netflix Thriller Factory."

After having a brief theatrical release in the UK, I Came By was exclusively released on Netflix in August 2022. It has remained there since, so you can stream the crime thriller whenever you like!

If you want to see Bonneville as Robert Crawley in the Downton Abbey franchise, then you may be partly disappointed, as The Grand Finale - the final instalment of the film series - is the only one that is streaming.

The period drama is currently available on Sky Cinema and NOW, with classic rom-com Notting Hill and British drama To Olivia also being on those services. If you want to watch the actor in the Paddington series, then you'll need HBO Max.
