The Man of Steel heads to the gridiron in the first Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story trailer.
As David Corenswet plays Superman/Clark Kent in the new DC Universe, he now takes on the role of former NFL player John Tuggle in the upcoming biopic. The last pick of the NFL draft is known as Mr. Irrelevant, and as the New York Giants' final selection in the 1983 draft, Tuggle is the ultimate underdog and has to fight against the odds to make the team. He goes on to make a significant impact on his teammates and faces life-threatening health issues.
Now, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Sports have released the first Mr. Irrelevant trailer. Check it out below:
With a mustache and sandy blond hair, Corenswet looks nearly unrecognizable as Tuggle. The cast also features Isabel May as Katie, who has been described as the love of Tuggle's life, Michael Shannon as New York Giants head coach Bill Parcells, and David Krumholtz as Julius "Whitey" Horai. The movie's initial pitch came from Reacher creator and showrunner Nick Santora, and it is directed by Warm Bodies and Nine Perfect Strangers' Jonathan Levine.
In June, it was reported that Mr. Irrelevant received near-perfect reviews in test screenings. It had a score of 95/100 from men over 35, a 100 from women over 35, and an average of 92 from all test screen viewers. This instills further confidence after being given a wide theatrical release date of December 25, a space that is frequently given to blockbusters and movies with considerable awards buzz.
Sports movies have generally not been as successful and far-reaching at the box office as they used to be, as evidenced by how 2025's Christy and The Smashing Machine significantly underperformed. With a reported budget in the $30 million range and filming in Australia, Mr. Irrelevant was able to land a theatrical release, and looks to change the genre's trajectory at the box office.
Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story is the first feature-length theatrical film to be released as part of a partnership between the NFL and Skydance Sports. Prior to this, they worked together on the documentary America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys.
Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story releases in theaters on December 25.
