Inquirer business reporter wins PIDS media award

MANILA, Philippines — Inquirer business reporter Ian Nicolas P. Cigaral of the Philippine Daily Inquirer has been recognized by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) for his work in bringing research-based economic and development issues to a wider audience.

Cigaral received the “Kwentista ng Pananaliksik: Most Supportive Print/Online Journalist” award at this year’s Saliksik at Balita: PIDS Media Awards, which honors journalists who help translate policy research into public understanding.

PIDS, the government’s primary socioeconomic policy research institution, cited Cigaral for his “outstanding contributions to research-informed public discourse.”

Cigaral received the award Tuesday in Quezon City from PIDS president Philip Arnold Tuaño, former Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. and PIDS vice president Marife Ballesteros.

Cigaral has covered a range of economic and financial issues during his years at the Inquirer. He began by reporting on public finance and the broader macroeconomy before moving to the central bank and banking beats.

The award was presented during the kickoff forum and press conference for the 24th Development Policy Research Month, an annual observance held every September under Proclamation No. 247, issued in 2002.

The monthlong event seeks to highlight the role of policy research in national development and encourage public discussion of issues affecting the country.

This year’s theme, “Building Strong Institutions, Unlocking Human Capital Potential,” focuses on the role of effective, accountable, and resilient institutions in turning investments in education, health, labor markets, and social protection into greater economic opportunity and a better quality of life. /cb
