Sisi issues new Presidential directives regarding private vehicle licensing

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered the Interior Ministry to take the necessary measures to serve the best interests of citizens in private vehicle licensing.

These directives emphasize improving the quality of services provided, rationalizing vehicle licensing costs, and ensuring that citizens are treated with courtesy and respect.

These instructions arise when vehicle licensing and renewal procedures are a matter of significant public interest, impacting millions of citizens due to the numerous requirements and steps involved in the licensing process.

Vehicle license renewal fees at traffic units vary based on the vehicle’s engine capacity and the duration of the license. Additional costs apply for inspection, insurance, documentation, the electronic sticker, and other required procedures.

Based on available data, the total cost of renewing a car license for three years may range from LE4,000 to LE 6,000 or more—depending on the vehicle category and engine displacement—excluding the cost of any traffic fines

Vehicle Tax

The renewal tax amount varies according to the vehicle’s engine displacement: it is approximately LE 225 for cars with an engine capacity between 1,030 cc and 1,330 cc.

For cars with an engine capacity between 1,330 cc and 1,630 cc, the tax reaches approximately LE 750 , while it stands at about LE 3,000 for cars with an engine capacity between 1,630 cc and 2,030 cc.

For vehicles with an engine capacity exceeding 2,030 cc, the tax is calculated at a rate of 2.5 percent of the vehicle’s value.

Cost of Three-Year Renewal

When renewing the license for a three-year period, the cost of the tax and mandatory insurance increases; figures indicate approximately LE 3,390 for the tax and LE 190 for the insurance.

Car Licensing Requirements for 2026

• The key requirements for car licensing include the following:
• Payment of prescribed taxes and fees.
• Civil liability insurance covering vehicle accidents and resulting property damage.
• Compliance of the vehicle with safety and road-worthy standards.
• Installing a GPS device.
• The license applicant must be at least 18 years old (or 21 years old for professional-use licenses).
• Passing a medical examination at centers accredited by the General Directorate of Traffic.
• Possession of an educational certificate or a literacy certificate.
• Completion of a safe driving fundamentals course at a traffic-affiliated driving school.
• Undergoing a drug screening test.
• The applicant must not have a conviction for certain criminal offenses, in accordance with applicable regulations.
• No prior convictions for homicide or causing injury while driving a vehicle.
• Submission of four 4×6 personal photos, two medical certificates (general health and vision), and two copies of the national ID card.
• Equipping the vehicle with a reflective warning triangle, a first-aid kit, and fire extinguishers.
