Mark Hamill & Seth Rogen Officially Set New Reboot Of Iconic 35-Year-Old Crime Series

Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen are teaming up to revive an iconic crime series for Disney+.

In recent years, Disney+ has released several acclaimed and popular TV reboots and revivals of iconic series, such as the two-season Goosebumps reboot, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place revival, this year's The Muppet Show special, and Daredevil: Born Again. With the majority of these series having already concluded or are nearing their end, as Disney announced this week that Daredevil: Born Again will end with season 3, the streamer is looking to expand on these efforts with some brand-new reboots in the works.

Disney+ has officially announced today that the streaming service has ordered a new Darkwing Duck animated series. The upcoming superhero crime show brings back the iconic titular character from Disney's 1991 animated series of the same name, which originally ran for 91 episodes on Disney Channel, ABC, and syndication. Voiced by Jim Cummings in the original series, Darkwing Duck/Drake Mallard will now be voiced by Star Wars legend Mark Hamill, whose animated work also notably includes playing The Joker in various Batman movies and TV shows.

The new series continuation reveals that Darkwing Duck has been trapped in an alternate world unaware of his superhero exploits for the past 35 years. Suddenly, a teen named Duckie who knows about his superhero past arrives to compel Darkwing Duck back into his vigilante persona. In Disney+'s Darkwing Duck, the duo works together to face off against former enemies like Negaduck and Megavolt, as well as reunite with allies such as Launchpad McQuack, Gosalyn Mallard, and Morgana to save the universe.

In addition to Hamill as Drake Mallard, Disney+ has assembled an all-star voice cast for the Darkwing Duck revival with many Disney alums. The new Darkwing Duck series' cast also includes Seth Rogen as Launchpad McQuack, Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn Mallard, Lilimar as Duckie, Dan Stevens as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis as Rosa, the MCU's Kathryn Newton as Firecracker, Teo Briones as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy, Katie Rich as Officer Shanks, and Nat Faxon as Officer Webb.

Disney has also revealed a first-look image of Darkwing Duck, which unveils a new animated style for the classic character. Darkwing Duck's superhero costume remains stylistically similar to his original iteration, though he's also now adorned with a belt. More reveals of the new and returning classic characters are expected to arrive in coming months as the franchise continuation moves forward ahead of release.

The Disney animated TV show comes from executive producers Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui, with actor Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, and Gabby Grantham producing under Point Grey Pictures. Furthermore, original Darkwing Duck series creator Tad Stones was brought back to "consult on the development of [Darkwing Duck's] new adventures."

So far, Disney+ has yet to announce an intended release date or window for Darkwing Duck. However, the entire original series is currently streaming on Disney+, as well as the character's latest appearance in the 2017 DuckTales reboot show.
