Former world number five Lorenzo Musetti of Italy claimed his first ATP title since 2022 on Sunday, defeating American Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the ATP 250 event in Lyon.

The 24-year-old picked up his third career Tour-level trophy, having previously won in Hamburg and Naples four seasons ago. The result also ended a run of seven consecutive final defeats.

Over a commanding 81 minutes in southeast France, Musetti broke serve twice early in each set and drew 28 unforced errors from his second-seeded rival.

The straightforward win contrasted sharply with the sixth seed’s tough path to the final. He had to display remarkable physical endurance to overcome France’s Luca Van Assche in a three-and-a-half-hour quarterfinal battle, and then saved four match points in a lengthy semifinal victory over fellow Italian Fabio Cobolli.

“The spirit of fight was the key for this tournament,” Musetti said.

“I had an incredible attitude. I have to say thanks to my team... Today I felt more relaxed inside my head and my tennis was more fluid and it was a great performance.
