Pokémon has had a packed year so far, celebrating the franchise's 30th anniversary in grand fashion with several major announcements, including the reveal of Pokémon Winds & Waves, the new Pokémon: Wild Card movie in the works, a massive celebration of the series at Pokémon Worlds earlier this month, and of course, a brand-new TCG 30th Celebration line dropping on September 16.
TCG fans have already been surprised with several incredible redesigns across the franchise, not all part of the official 30th Celebration line either, with beautiful new Eeveelution cards and figures revealed in Pokémon China, as well as a stunning new Pikachu redesign for the new Future Rare cards coming soon.
To keep the good news coming, Pokémon has also revealed several new Legendary cards for the upcoming 30th Celebration TCG set, including an exciting new redesign for the iconic Groudon and Kyogre that will set players up for an epic new scuffle of champions.
The Pokémon TCG’s upcoming 30th Celebration expansion is bringing together Legendary Pokémon from across franchise history, with the latest preview highlighting favorites such as Ho-Oh, Lugia, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyogre, Groudon, Zacian, and Zamazenta. The anniversary set launches globally on September 16, with its Legendary lineup serving as a celebration of some of Pokémon's most memorable showdowns.
One of the biggest redesigns comes by way of Kyogre and Groudon, the Legendary titan foes introduced in Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire. Groudon is associated with expanding the land, while Kyogre possesses the power to expand the seas, placing the two in an ancient conflict capable of devastating Hoenn.
As Pokémon fans will remember, their cataclysmic battle was ultimately stopped by Rayquaza, establishing the trio as one of the franchise's defining Legendary groups. Their rivalry has since been revisited throughout the games, anime, manga, and even the TCG, including the two-piece Kyogre & Groudon LEGEND card from 2010's HS Undaunted. Take a look here:
Both return with gorgeous new cards for the 30th Celebration set, with Kyogre, illustrated by Tonji Matsuno, being a 140-HP Water-type Rare whose Hydro Pump starts at 60 damage and gains another 30 damage for every Water Energy attached. Groudon, on the other end, illustrated by Takumi Wada, is likewise a 140-HP Rare, but its Break Ground attack deals a tremendous 250 damage at the cost of also hitting each of the player's benched Mon for 20 damage.
The contrasting mechanics feel particularly fitting for the pair, as Kyogre steadily builds overwhelming power while Groudon unleashes the sort of destructive force its legendary reputation promises. In addition to these amazing new Legendaries, the entire lineup is sure to give Pokémon TCG fans plenty to look forward to when the set launches later this week.
