A 10/10 RPG masterpiece is being added to PlayStation Plus for free, and if you enjoy the genre and classic JRPG style but with a modern touch, be sure to check it out. A lot of remarkable titles have been added to Sony’s gaming subscription service lately. One of the big additions to PlayStation Plus in August was a massive 100-hour open-world RPG, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. This game came accompanied by other titles, like the day-one release of Big Walk, as well as Dying Light 2, Helldivers, and more.

Pretty soon, however, more remarkable games are making their way into the subscription service. As was revealed by Sony in an official post on the PlayStation Blog, four new games are being given to members in September, as part of PlayStation Plus monthly games. The headliner for the period is Sniper Elite: Resistance. Players are also getting access to MLB The Show 26 and Wobbly Life, but the fourth and final freebie is actually a 2022 RPG that is fantastic and totally worth your time if you enjoy titles like Chrono Trigger.

The fourth part of the PS Plus monthly free games in September is Chained Echoes. Released in 2022 by Umami Tiger (Matthias Linda), published by Deck13 and WhisperGames, Chained Echoes is a turn-based RPG that is reminiscent of the 16-bit era, when many RPGs and JRPGs exploded in popularity. The RPG pays homage to several SNES classics with its pixel art and gameplay style.

Set on the continent of Valandis, Chained Echoes was one of the best RPGs of 2022, even though its last-minute release was extremely underrated. Chained Echoes is a story-driven RPG that follows a group of heroes as they explore a huge world, fighting to bring peace. Along the way, they’ll face enemies of all kinds, from humans to dragons and even mechanical suits. However, not only enemies have access to this type of equipment; heroes in Chained Echoes can also pilot mechs and airships.

In Screen Rant’s review of Chained Echoes, we highlight that the game “is a fresh, smart adventure that celebrates classic JRPGs while not being afraid to push into new directions.” For example, the gameplay feels fast and modern, and there are tons of quality-of-life features that “keep the game feeling new and distinctly 21st-century.” There’s no doubt that Chained Echoes is one of the best modern RPGs with a classic touch, and one that is directly celebrating titles like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6.

If you haven’t played this game before, be sure to add it to your library for free using your subscription. According to Sony, the free September games can be claimed between September 1 and October 5. If you redeem Chained Echoes during this period, you can download and play the RPG for free at any time, provided you are still subscribed to PlayStation Plus.
