Dolphins ship QB Ewers to Jaguars for draft pick

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars traded for quarterback Quinn Ewers on Saturday, sending a sixth-round pick in 2028 to the Miami Dolphins for the second-year player, the teams announced.

Ewers, 23, played in four games last season and completed 66.3% of his passes for 622 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions. The Dolphins went 1-2 in Ewers' three starts.

The Dolphins selected Ewers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and he made the initial 53-man roster as the team's emergency third quarterback behind Tua Tagoavailoa and Zach Wilson. He got his first NFL action during a blowout loss to the Cleveland Browns midway through his rookie season, completing 5-of-8 passes for 53 yards, including a 40-yard completion to Dee Eskridge.

Ewers reverted back to the team's third-string quarterback after the game, but earned his first career start in Week 16 when Tagovailoa was benched. He went 1-2 in three starts to close the season, including a 20-17 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in which he completed 14-of-22 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

When a new regime took over in Miami, Ewers was given the opportunity to compete for the Dolphins' backup quarterback job with Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski. After a promising spring, Ewers' play declined in training camp; he completed just 1-of-8 passes in his lone preseason appearance, for 27 yards and an interception. A groin injury held him out of Miami's final two games of the preseason.

With Ewers headed to Jacksonville, the Dolphins could look to address their backup quarterback situation via trade or the waiver wire. Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said the team is "likely" to keep two quarterbacks on its initial 53-man roster.

The acquisition of Ewers indicates the Jaguars are likely moving on from backup quarterback Nick Mullens. The Jaguars signed Mullens to a two-year deal worth $4.5 million with $3 million guaranteed in March 2025. He was due to make $1.7 million in 2026. If he's cut the Jaguars would save $1.2 million but face a dead cap hit of $1.3 million, per OverTheCap.com.

NFL teams must trim their rosters to 53 by 6 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Mullens played in five games in mop-up duty last season, completing 3 of 3 passes for 19 yards. The 31-year-old Mullens entered the NFL in 2018 as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers. He spent three seasons there, one in Cleveland, and three in Minnesota before signing with the Jaguars.
