German national facing trial for alleged attempt to join IS
Germany's prosecutor's office said that a German national has been placed in pre-trial detention for allegedly attempting to join the so-called "Islamic State" terror group, while abroad, German news agency dpa reported.
What is known about the case
The agency cited a spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutor's Office as saying that an arrest warrant had been executed and that a 21-year-old was extradited to Germany.
The suspect is accused of travelling to Ethiopia from Berlin in January 2025, with the purpose of joining the IS terror group in Somalia.
Prosecutors allege that he never reached Somalia, but instead traveled to Pakistan to join IS, where he was reportedly arrested in February 2025.
The suspect stands accused of attempted membership in a terrorist organization abroad. He is also accused of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state.
Germany and the so-called "Islamic State"
Islamic extremists have carried out several attacks in Germany over the years. The deadliest was when a truck rammed a Berlin Christmas market in 2016, killing 12 people.
In July a German court sentenced a man and a woman to lengthy prison sentences for enslaving and abusing two Yazidi girls under the so-called "Islamic State" group in Iraq.
The Iraqi couple was convicted of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. They were also convicted of sexually abusing children and aiding and abetting the listed offenses.
The couple, identified as Twana H.S. and Asia R.A., in line with German privacy laws, were most recently living in Germany and were arrested in the southern state of Bavaria in April in 2024.
