One year later, Kwankwaso’s transformer still grounded in Nasarawa community

One year after former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, donated a transformer to the Mai-Gizo community in Angwan Shamaki, Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, residents are still waiting for electricity as the equipment remains uninstalled.

The transformer was donated after Mr Kwankwaso, who was passing through the community, reportedly noticed that residents had no access to electricity despite the community’s proximity to the Keffi NYSC camp.

Community leader Idris Bello said the politician, who is the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, delivered the transformer less than 24 hours after promising to provide it.

But one year on, the transformer is still lying on the ground, awaiting installation.

Bello said the donation was complemented by Wadada Aliyu, the Nasarawa State All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, who contributed ₦1 million towards the installation.

He, however, said the money was not enough to complete the project.

“We have reached out to the state government also to assist, yet the facility is still lying on the ground one year later,” Mr Bello said.

He lamented that residents had endured darkness for about three years, adding that Mr Kwankwaso’s intervention had initially given the community hope of an end to its electricity woes.

“Our community has been without light for the past three years. With Kwankwaso, we were hopeful, but up till now, we are still in darkness,” he said.

Mr Bello said the community had deployed security personnel to guard the equipment against theft or vandalism.

The residents and other community stakeholders have consequently appealed to Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, to intervene and provide the funds needed to install the transformer.

They said the installation would bring an end to years of darkness and give residents access to electricity.
