Bali's Pengambengan port to become world-class fisheries hub

Jembrana, Bali (ANTARA) - Indonesia will develop the Pengambengan fishing port in Bali into a world-class fisheries hub integrating fishing, processing, and distribution, with completion targeted for 2029, Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said Tuesday.

"The development is not only for economic growth. We hope it will become a place that combines a modern fisheries industry and tourism, bringing good opportunities for Bali's future," Trenggono said in Jembrana, Bali.

The Integrated Fishing Ports and International Fish Market Phase I project will expand the port area from 13.5 hectares to 49.3 hectares and the harbor basin from 24 hectares to 88.3 hectares.

The expansion will increase the port's capacity from 1,273 to 1,600 vessels, allowing it to accommodate larger fishing vessels currently operating from Benoa Port.

Annual fish landings are projected to more than double, reaching 124,000 metric tons from 61,300 metric tons, while annual non-tax state revenue is expected to reach Rp104 billion, up from Rp48 billion. The project is also expected to create about 25,000 jobs, nearly three times the current workforce, as the port expands its role to include fish processing, marketing, and distribution.

The expanded facility will handle a wider range of fish, including tuna. Its environmentally friendly design and operations could also support the development of a new tourism destination in western Bali.

Trenggono said preparations for the project had taken considerable time because the government needed to secure not only financing but also support from businesses and fishing communities.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries must also ensure that the development meets the needs of small and large fisheries businesses, as well as traditional fishermen in the area.

The project, supported by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), has a contract value of Rp1.27 trillion and is projected to be completed by the end of 2029.

The Pengambengan modernization is part of a broader effort to upgrade Indonesia's fisheries infrastructure. A similar modernization program is also underway at Kejawanan fishing port in Cirebon.
