Matt Cardona wants to be back in the ring before the year ends, and the newly announced John Cena Classic gives him a date to chase. The SmackDown star is recovering from a torn triceps, and he wants to be medically cleared by December 14, the day of the tournament. He answered WWE's announcement on X, writing,“I'm going to try to get cleared by December 14.”The Classic will put main roster and NXT talent against each other, with Club WWE members getting a vote on the winner. Whoever wins takes the John Cena Classic Championship, and WWE hasn't said yet how the full format will work.

Matt Cardona Targets a December Return Despite His Triceps Injury
The injury is the only real obstacle. The former Zack Ryder tore the triceps in his August 21 match against Kit Wilson on Main Event, a bout that was taped before SmackDown in Toronto.
He felt a pop in the first minute on a second-rope dropkick, finished the match, and had surgery on August 25. He hasn't wrestled since.
Cardona doesn't want the slow route back. He has said he'd like to return sooner than his surgeons expect, and he named the 2027 Men's Royal Rumble as a possible comeback point.
“The plan is to be back shorter than the surgeons say. Maybe come back to the Royal Rumble. Who knows? That's February this year. So, I got some time.”
The Classic would come about two months earlier than that. It would also be his second Cena tournament, since he appeared as Zack Ryder in the John Cena Last Time Is Now Tournament last November, losing to LA Knight, before returning to WWE in January.
Before the injury he'd been getting momentum on SmackDown, including a segment with his wife, Chelsea Green, and Gunther. He then lost a hard-hitting match to The Ring General on the August 14 episode.
The John Cena Classic Will Feature WWE Main Roster and NXT Superstars
Cena gave the details himself on the November 2 episode of RAW in Brooklyn. The tournament takes place Monday, December 14, 2026, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
WWE will air two episodes of RAW that day, with the first coming from Perth, Australia, and the Orlando show carrying the Classic.
Cena first teased the idea at Backlash in May, and this time he unveiled the championship. The belt is built like his old spinner title. He also said Club WWE members will have a say in who wins.
Cody Rhodes is the first invitee, and Randy Orton interrupted the segment before Cena left the ring.
The rest of the field isn't set. Cena said he'll recruit more names at NXT and at Survivor Series in Houston, Texas.
