Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu has opened up on why not all badminton players can afford to fund their own tours, following the Sports Authority of India's (SAI) funding cuts for the European leg of the BWF World Tour. Sindhu, who won the Hylo Open 2026 in Germany last week, had to cover part of her accommodation expenses from her own pocket, along with several other Indian shuttlers. SAI clarified that the decision not to release the funds stemmed from the Badminton Association of India (BAI) missing the deadline to submit the players' list, rather than the Indian badminton contingent's poor performance at the Asian Games 2026.
While elaborating on a social media post, Sindhu highlighted the challenges faced by shuttlers compared to tennis players, many of whom are able to fund their tours from their own pockets.
Sindhu highlighted the stark difference in prize money between the two sports despite players incurring similar expenses on travel, accommodation and support staff.
"A first-round exit at Wimbledon earns 80,000 pounds. Winning the China Open, one of badminton's richest tournaments, earns $140,000. Lose in the first round? Just $2,000," Sindhu said.
Sindhu admitted that established athletes like herself can afford the luxury of funding their own tours, thanks to sponsorship deals and other commercial opportunities.
"I agree that established athletes should strive to be financially independent. I've been fortunate to have wonderful sponsors, but not everyone has that privilege. That's also why organisations like @OGQ_India are so important," she added.
However, she stressed that the situation is very different for younger players.
"I can find ways to fund my tour. But what about the 18-year-old chasing her dreams, hoping to become the next Sindhu or Lakshya?" she said.
Sindhu, however, thanked the Central Government and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for their continued support throughout her career.
"And I must acknowledge the tremendous support the Government of India and @Media_SAI have extended to athletes like us over the years. Their contribution to Indian sport cannot be understated," she added.
