Kerala flash flood: Death toll rises, more rain expected

Search and rescue authorities in the southern state of Kerala found three more dead bodies on Monday morning, taking the death toll from a flash flood to at least five. 

Six people were swept away on Sunday evening in the scenic town of Nilambur when the Kottapuzha River rose due to rainfall higher up in the landscape, local media reported. The search for the sixth person is still on. 

Floods and rain-triggered landslides are a common occurrence in Kerala during the monsoon months, between June and November.

The state's Chief Minister VD Satheesan is set to arrive in the town shortly.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued orange alerts for six districts in the state on Monday morning, warning of more downpour. 

An orange alert is the second highest in IMD's four-stage color-coded system, sitting just below the red warning. It tells local authorities and residents to 'be prepared' for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region.

Asian Games: India gains four more medal on day 2

Indian athletes picked up two silver and two bronze medals on the second day of the Asian Games 2026 in Japan, taking the nation's tally to six.

Historically, the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games are where India gains most of its medals at an international level.

Indian shooters Himanshu Dhillon and former world champion Rudrankksh Patil secured India a two-podium finish in the men's 10-meter air rifle event on Monday, winning a silver and a bronze medal respectively.

These medals came barely an hour after they, along with Parth Mane, won a silver in the men's 10-meter air rifle team event for shooting an aggregate qualification score of 1890.1.

30-year-old Suchika Tariyal settled for a bronze in the women's traditional 60 kg mixed martial arts event on Monday after a close-call fight with Singapore's Hui Hoon Teo. Tariyal was seen weeping after the final decision went in Teo's favor on a post-draw technicality where the lighter athlete is awarded the win.

This takes India's overall tally to six medals after picking up two silver medals in the women's 10 meter air rifle competition on Sunday.

Diving right into it, it's day two of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya Japan and Indian athletes have cinched four more medals in shooting and mixed martial arts, taking India's total tally to six so far. 

Coming to India, a flash flood in the southern state of Kerala has left at least five dead. India's weather agency has issued a heavy rainfall alert in six districts in the state for today.

Also in news is an ongoing boardroom battle at one of India's largest private conglomerates, Tata Sons, as the company hashes it out with its controlling charitable organization over the reappointment of its chairman and a possible public listing.
