In short:

Jordan Yap, 30, was reported missing by his family last month when he failed to check into a hotel and missed his flight.

He had been on a multi-day hike in Peru's Huayhuash region.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it was providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Peru.

A Melbourne man who went missing in a mountainous region of Peru has been found dead, weeks after he failed to return from a remote solo hike.

Family and friends of Jordan Yap launched a search mission after the 30-year-old failed to return from a hike in South America last month.

Mr Yap's friends shared the sad news on a social media page launched to help with search efforts.

"With a heavy heart we are so sorry to tell you Jordan has been found, and he did not survive," the social media statement said.

"Please remember Jordan as the vibrant man he was, and for the immense joy he brought to so many people's lives."

The ABC understands friends and family of Mr Yap were notified by local authorities that his body had been found in the Mitucocha Lagoon area.

Mitucocha Lagoon, or Lake Mitococha, is a high-altitude (4,270 metres) lake in central Peru around 200 kilometres north of the capital, Lima.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was assisting the family of an Australian who died in Peru.

"We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time," a spokesperson said.

Mr Yap had attempted to complete a hike in the remote Huayhuash region, which was expected to take about 10 days.

He left his hostel in the town of Huaraz on September 14 and was due to check into a hotel on the 23rd before catching a flight from Lima to Cusco the following day.

His family raised concern after Mr Yap failed to check into his hotel and missed his flight.

They reported him missing and engaged a local private mountain rescue team to help search for their son.

His father, Vinh Dao, had previously told the ABC that Mr Yap was an experienced hiker, but the trip to Peru was one of his first solo trips.
