Stranger Things is back! Netflix confirms new '50s-set spin-off show

Stranger Things Day celebrations for 2026 hit with a bang, with Netflix announcing a new spin-off series. Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is a prequel series set in the 1950s, created by the Duffer Brothers and longtime Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry.

It is set before the events of the award-winning stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow in 1959, which explores Henry Creel's past.

Casting, plot, and a release date are yet to be announced, though we do know it will be streaming on Netflix in 2028.

Speaking ahead of Other Worlds' release, Matt and Ross Duffer said: "We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating.

"It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new … actually, we’re not allowed to say any more. Now, on to casting. In the meantime — watch the skies, nerds!"

Showrunner, co-creator, and writer Trefry, who also penned the script for The First Shadow, added: "The Duffer Brothers gave me my first paying job in Hollywood, and it has been a joy and a fever dream ever since.

"Now, it is my insane honour and privilege to be bringing this new chapter of Stranger Things to life alongside them and our incredible director, Joe Wright.

"With the support of Netflix and 21 Laps, we have had the time of our lives returning to all the horror, wonder and mystery of the flagship, while also telling a wholly new story, one we hope will blow your minds and break your hearts all over again. There are so many more mysteries to explore. Welcome to Other Worlds."

It's not the first time Stranger Things has received a TV spin-off, with animated series Tales from '85 hitting Netflix in April.

Seasons one and two follow the Hawkins gang in the winter of 1985 as they "investigate new monsters and a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town," per the synopsis.

Stranger Things seasons one to five are available to stream now on Netflix. Other Worlds will stream on Netflix.
