Backrooms 2 Return Chances Addressed By Original Star After Record-Breaking Success

Translate

Backrooms took the world by storm this year, and one star is weighing in on whether he could return for a sequel.

Backrooms is a Kane Parsons project based on the director's own YouTube horror series of the same name. A24 brought this story to the big screen, focusing the narrative on a down-on-his-luck architect who discovers a mysterious room in the back of his furniture shop. The movie stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as this architect, Clark, and Renate Reinsve as Clark's therapist, Mary, with a supporting cast that includes Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Avan Jogia, and Lukita Maxwell. The movie is now available to stream on HBO Max after a successful theatrical run.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley at New York City Comic Con for The Exorcist: Martyrs, Ejiofor discusses whether he would ever return to the Backrooms franchise. Crowley admitted that Clark would have to defy death in order to return, but still wondered whether Ejiofor would consider coming back to the franchise. The actor said that he felt that "Clark's story" has been "concluded" for now, he did say he "had a great" time working on Backrooms, and ultimately "who knows?". Check out the full quote from Ejiofor below:

ScreenRant: Chiwetel, you're having a bit of a moment right now in horror. We all loved Backrooms earlier this year. I feel like no one ever fully dies in the Backrooms...

Chiwetel Ejiofor: Yeah, but I don't know. It was pretty messy at the end there for Clark. There's a million ways that it can go.

ScreenRant: The sequel seems pretty fast-tracked right now. Is there any world in which you two would get back together?

Chiwetel Ejiofor: Who knows? I had a great [time]. I still see Kane a little bit, and we hang out. We don't really talk about that very much, though. I feel like Clark's story, for the time being, is out there. We concluded that. So, let's see.

Not only does Clark meet an untimely fate in Backrooms, but he does so in an over-the-top way. Throughout the movie, audiences are shown the alternate persona, Pirate Clark, version of the lead, who is a Backrooms entity that looks like a distorted version of Clark, wearing a pirate costume. This entity, a manifestation of Clark's own internal struggles, is eventually Clark's own downfall, sinking his teeth into Clark and killing him.

However, the world of Backrooms is imaginative enough to open the possibility for Clark to return in some way after his death. The existence of Pirate Clark himself establishes that the Backrooms are a liminal space that features entities that mirror real life in some way. Even if Pirate Clark, too, was killed by researchers at the end of the movie, it could be that Clark's spirit is conjured in some way through a future supernatural figure in the Backrooms.

Clark's fate in the franchise will all depend on the direction that Backrooms 2 goes in. With the sequel confirmed, Parsons and his team need to hone what to focus on in the next installment. Whether they will follow the team of researchers revealed in the Backrooms ending or not remains to be seen, but if it is a continuation of the first movie's story at all, some of the hit film's characters could make reprises.
