Malaysia elected to IAEA Board of Governors for 2026-2028

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has been elected to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2026-2028 term.

The election took place during the IAEA's 70th Regular Session of the General Conference in Vienna, Austria, held from Sept 14 to 18, 2026, Wisma Putra said in a statement.

The 35-member Board of Governors is one of the IAEA's principal policy-making bodies, overseeing the agency's operations, approving safeguards agreements and shaping key policy decisions on the safe, secure and peaceful cooperation in atomic science and technology.

Malaysia has served 10 terms on the Board since joining the IAEA in 1969, most recently from 2020 to 2022.

Malaysia said the election reflected its commitment to contributing its experience and expertise in support of the Board's mandate and important role.

It also looked forward to collaborating with fellow IAEA member states and the agency to advance non-proliferation objectives and promote the safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
