Jaissle questions booking compared to rival managers

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has questioned why he was booked for his touchline behaviour after he felt some other animated managers were not.

The fourth official repeatedly reminded Jaissle to stay inside his technical area during last week's 2-2 draw against Bournemouth before he was eventually shown a yellow card by referee Rob Jones in the 70th minute for straying outside again.

After the game, at St James' Park, Jaissle contested the "benefit of that rule" if he was "just supporting and engaging with the team".

"I hope I don't need to adapt," the 38-year-old said a few days on. "I was really clear that I was disappointed.

"I made that also really clear in many aspects because, from my point of view, if you're 20cm outside your box and you encourage and support your own team in a positive way, an emotional way, I'm not sure if that's then a yellow card.

"Also compare when I'm looking at some of my colleagues."

Jaissle, who arrived from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli last month, is the only manager to have been cautioned in the Premier League in the opening weeks of the season.

When asked if there were other coaches who were as animated, who were not booked, Jaissle said: "You can say so."

A new charter on participant behaviour was introduced by the Premier League, the FA, the EFL and the Professional Game Referees in 2023, which specifies occupants must remain within their technical area during the match.

In pre-season, officials from the Premier League and the Professional Game Referees visited each top-flight club to update managers on operational matters and laws.
