A minor Strombolian activity was observed over Mayon Volcano’s crater summit early on Sunday, October 11, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
According to state seismologists, the activity was observed at 3:18 a.m.
It generated a plume that rose 500 meters above and drifted west-northwest as captured by PHIVOLCS’ special cameras.
Minor Strombolian activity is characterized as low level, intermittent volcanic explosions that eject incandescent lava fragments or bursts of expanding gases into the air.
The volcano, located in Albay, is under Alert Level 2 or moderate level of volcanic unrest. This means elevated levels of volcanic activities like volcanic earthquakes, steam or gas emission, and ground temperature.
Under Alert Level 2, intermittent steam or ash explosion is also observed.
Moreover, entry within the permanent danger zone is prohibited. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/KG, GMA News
