Judy Garland’s former Bel-Air home has changed hands for $11.1 million, more than a decade after it sold for $5.2 million. The 1938 estate at 1231 Stone Canyon Road was listed for $11.495 million in March 2024 before selling in July, according to property records and reports from The Real Deal, Realtor.com and Architectural Digest.
The house carries a particularly strong connection to Garland’s early Hollywood years. She was 16 when the residence was commissioned, and 1938 was also the year she was cast as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz. Designed by celebrated architect Wallace Neff, the traditional-style home was created for Garland and her family and remains one of the properties associated with the actress’s rise to stardom.Set on roughly 2.66 acres, the estate combines the scale of an old Hollywood property with updates made by later owners.
The 5,513-square-foot house has five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, with the grounds including a swimming pool and a separate writer’s cottage. The property is also located close to Sunset Boulevard and the Hotel Bel-Air, placing it within one of Los Angeles’ most established luxury residential areas. Its architectural character has remained an important part of the home’s appeal. The entrance opens into a grand foyer with a sweeping staircase and wrought-iron railing, while the interiors retain features such as hardwood flooring, storybook-style windows and traditional moulding.
Later renovations introduced more contemporary luxury without completely removing the character of the original house. The kitchen was updated with modern appliances and a large marble island, while the adjoining breakfast area makes use of a bay window. The primary suite includes a fireplace, high ceilings, built-in storage and a dressing area. French doors and large windows help connect several of the living spaces with the surrounding grounds.Outside, the property has landscaped lawns, a brick-lined patio and a pool area. The detached cottage adds another layer to the estate and has been described as a writer’s studio. The combination of expansive grounds and a relatively intimate main residence gives the property the feel of a private Hollywood retreat rather than a newly built mega-mansion.Garland’s connection to the house goes beyond its construction date.
Historical records identify 1231 Stone Canyon Road as the Judy Garland Residence, while accounts of her life place her there with members of her family during her teenage years. The house was part of the Stone Canyon Road area that attracted several entertainment-industry figures during Hollywood’s Golden Age.The property has also had a notable ownership history since Garland’s time. It sold for $5.2 million in February 2011, according to property records.
It was then listed for $7.1 million in 2012 and sold for about $6.77 million that April. The home remained with the Chozen family until its 2024 sale. The 2024 transaction represented a substantial increase from the property’s 2011 sale price. After being placed on the market at nearly $11.5 million, the estate ultimately sold for $11.1 million, according to The Real Deal and the property’s sales record. The buyer’s identity was not publicly disclosed at the time of the sale.More than 85 years after Garland’s family first moved into the house, its biggest draw remains its connection to a defining chapter of Hollywood history. Unlike many celebrity properties that are heavily altered or replaced over the decades, the Stone Canyon residence continues to retain elements of its original architectural identity while accommodating the expectations of a modern luxury home.
