Former World No. 6 Gael Monfils has been appointed captain of France’s Davis Cup team, just a month after announcing his retirement from professional tennis, the French Tennis Federation (FFT) confirmed on Saturday.
The 40-year-old will succeed Paul-Henri Mathieu, who guided France to the Davis Cup quarterfinals last year.
Monfils will begin his new role when France starts its qualifying campaign in February 2027, marking a quick return to the sport after bringing his 22-year playing career to an end.
The Frenchman played his final competitive match at the US Open in September, where he exited in the second round. His career included two Grand Slam semifinal appearances and a career-high ranking of World No. 6.
Monfils represented France in eight editions of the Davis Cup, winning 12 of his 15 singles matches.

One of his most memorable performances came during the 2014 final against Switzerland, when he defeated Roger Federer in straight sets. However, France eventually lost the tie.
He was not part of the French team that won its tenth Davis Cup title in 2017.
Expressing pride in his appointment, Monfils said representing France had always held special significance for him.
Monfils will also receive support from former French players Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet in his new role.
