Indonesia supports sustainable vegetable oils at China conference

Beijing (ANTARA) - The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Shanghai has expressed support for promoting sustainable vegetable oils under the framework of the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC).
The support was highlighted at the 4th Sustainable Vegetable Oils Conference (SVOC), held in China for the first time on Tuesday (October 27), with around 220 participants from 11 countries in attendance.
The conference aimed to strengthen strategic cooperation in the global vegetable oils sector.
"Hosting the SVOC in China reflects the close bilateral ties between Indonesia and China and our shared commitment to strengthening cooperation across various sectors," Indonesian Ambassador to China Djauhari Oratmangun said in a written statement received by ANTARA in Beijing on Thursday.
Djauhari said the strategic partnership would help maintain economic stability, promote sustainable investment, and strengthen inclusive and resilient global supply chains.
Palm oil is China's largest imported vegetable oil, with nearly all its supplies coming from CPOPC member countries.
The CPOPC needs to ensure a steady supply of palm oil to China, including by promoting cooperation in the integration of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve production efficiency.
CPOPC Secretary-General Izzana Salleh said that, as demand for vegetable oils continues to grow, the organization must find ways to increase productivity through the responsible use of resources while ensuring sustainable supply chains.
"Eighty-nine percent of the global palm oil supply comes from CPOPC member countries. The palm oil sector also provides livelihoods for millions of business owners and smallholder farmers in producing countries," Salleh said.
The conference was also attended by representatives of Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the governments of Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and the Republic of the Congo, as well as business players in the vegetable oils sector, academics, researchers, and other stakeholders.
Panel discussions at the conference focused on the shift toward greener policies for the palm oil industry, the integration of technology into vegetable oil production, capacity-building for smallholder farmers to support sustainable productivity, and the development of biofuels to promote a low-carbon economy.
Indonesian Consul General in Shanghai Berlianto Situngkir also highlighted the strategic significance of hosting the SVOC in Shanghai, noting that China is the largest trading partner of CPOPC member countries.
Shanghai, meanwhile, is a major economic hub in China, with strengths in finance, technological innovation, manufacturing, trade, and global connectivity.
"Synergies across these areas will boost productivity, drive innovation, and generate greater added value, making them key to building a competitive economy that is well connected to global supply chains," Situngkir said.
