Indonesia to inspect 2,140 vessels ahead of year-end holidays

Semarang (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Transportation Ministry will inspect 2,140 vessels ahead of the 2026 Christmas and 2027 New Year holiday period to ensure maritime safety and readiness, the ministry said.
The inspections will take place from November 1 to 30 as part of preparations for the 2026 Christmas and 2027 New Year travel period, Acting Director General of Sea Transportation Samsuddin said.
“Through inspections of 2,140 vessels, we will ensure that vessel safety, crew arrangements, cargo loading, and safety equipment receive top priority before the ships are allowed to operate,” he said.
Operational data as of October 30 showed that the inspection plan covers 511 passenger ships, 63 long-distance roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels, 460 Ro-Ro ferries, 162 traditional vessels, 821 tourist vessels, and 123 high-speed craft.
The inspections will cover vessel safety, pollution prevention, crew qualifications, load lines and cargo loading, crew welfare, passenger health, vessel legal status, and safety and security management systems, Samsuddin said.
Authorities will also check life-saving equipment, firefighting systems, evacuation routes, passenger capacity controls, and preparations for adverse weather to reduce the risk of accidents.
Tourist vessels will undergo direct inspections before operating as part of the requirements for obtaining a Sailing Approval Letter (SPB). Passenger capacity must comply with the results of on-site inspections.
The ministry will also assess the readiness of vessels and ferry infrastructure, particularly on routes expected to experience heavy traffic.
For the Java-Bali routes, operational planning also includes alternative routes to help ease congestion on the Ketapang-Gilimanuk crossing. Options under consideration include Jangkar-Celukan Bawang, Tanjung Wangi-Celukan Bawang, and Jangkar-Padang Bai, Samsuddin said.
He said the implementation of alternative routes would depend on port readiness, vessel availability, operational support, and the outcome of further coordination and decisions.
