11-year-old boy drowns in Tanay river — police

LUCENA CITY — An 11-year-old boy drowned in a river in Tanay, Rizal, on Thursday, Aug. 20, police reported on Friday.

The Calabarzon police said the victim, identified only as “Miguel,” a resident of Barangay Plaza Aldea, told his mother at about 11 a.m. that he was going to fetch water from a nearby river with his friends.

At about 3:10 p.m., a teenage boy identified as “Jomart,” who was in the area, saw Miguel struggling in the river and immediately dove into the water to rescue him.

Jomart found Miguel unresponsive underwater and pulled him up to the riverbank before seeking help.

The boy was rushed to the Tanay General Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Police said Miguel’s father executed a written waiver declining an autopsy to determine the exact cause of his son’s death.

The police recorded the incident as a drowning case. INQ /mr
