No flag came out on the play, which is exactly why this fine feels like an afterthought. The NFL fined New England Patriots linebacker Robert Spillane $23,882 for a helmet hit in last Sunday's 24-19 win over the Miami Dolphins. The play came with 54 seconds left in the third quarter, and officials did not penalize it. ESPN's Mike Reiss reported the fine on Saturday, a day before the Patriots meet the Green Bay Packers. Spillane faces no suspension, so he remains free to play.

Robert Spillane Fine For Helmet Use

Reiss posted the details on X:"Patriots LB Robert Spillane was fined $23,882 for unnecessary roughness (use of the helmet) in last week's win over the Dolphins. The play came with 54 seconds left in the third quarter. Spillane was not penalized."

The league reviews every play after a game, flagged or not, which is how a hit can pass in real time and still land in the weekly fine report.

A flag on the field is one call made at full speed. The league office gets to watch the tape as many times as it wants. The amount matches the standard first-offense figure for helmet use in 2026, so the number itself looks routine. Spillane can appeal for a smaller fine or a full reversal, though nothing public suggests he has done so.

He still had a productive afternoon in Miami. He finished with four tackles and two passes defended, and through eight games this season he has 47 tackles and a forced fumble. He has not missed a game.

Christian Elliss Not Fined After Dolphins Penalty

Teammate Christian Elliss went through the opposite experience. Late in the second quarter, officials flagged him for unnecessary roughness after contact with Dolphins receiver Malik Washington. The 15-yard penalty moved Miami toward scoring range. Washington left for a medical evaluation, came back, and scored a touchdown.

Elliss was not fined, Reiss confirmed. That leaves an odd split in the Week 8 fine list. The Patriots defender who drew a flag paid nothing, while Spillane, whose hit went unpenalized, is the only New England player on it.

The Patriots needed their defense to settle down after a rough first half. Miami led 13-3 at the break, and New England tightened up after halftime to win and move to 5-3. Spillane was part of that group, and he will be part of it again against the Packers on Sunday, Nov. 8.
