Parliament resumes today for five-day sitting amid pending ministerial nominations

Parliament is set to resume sitting today, Monday, August 24, following a recall by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to enable the House to consider urgent parliamentary business.

The five-day sitting will run until Friday, August 28, at Parliament House in Accra, with proceedings scheduled to begin at noon today. The recall was issued by the Speaker on Wednesday, August 12, under Order 58(4) of the Standing Orders of Parliament.

Although the Speaker did not specify the matters to be considered during the special sitting, the recall comes at a time when several ministerial nominations from President John Dramani Mahama are awaiting parliamentary consideration.

President Mahama has nominated Klottey Korle MP Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, following the death of the substantive minister, Murtala Mohammed.

The President has also nominated Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, alongside the reassignment of two other ministers to new portfolios.

The nominations were submitted to Parliament on Friday, August 7, in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires parliamentary approval before ministerial nominees can assume office.

Parliament is therefore expected to consider the nominations as part of its business during the five-day recall, including the vetting and approval or rejection of the nominees.
