Narrow escape for couple after lorry plunges into ravine at Hulu Terengganu landslide

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — A husband and wife escaped injury after they managed to get out of their lorry before it plunged into a ravine formed by a landslide along Jalan Aring-Kenyir near the Sungai Deka Elephant Conservation Centre in Hulu Terengganu yesterday.

Hulu Terengganu district police chief Superintendent Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the couple, aged 57 and 55, were travelling from their home in Ajil to Kuala Krai, Kelantan, to collect fruit supplies when the incident occurred at about 3.40pm, according to Kosmo! Online.

“They noticed the landslide when they arrived at the location and immediately stopped the vehicle before getting out to inspect the area.

“The lorry then slid into the collapsed section, believed to have been due to brake failure. The front and rear sections of the lorry were badly damaged,” he said when contacted here today.

Sharudin said checks showed the area had long been gazetted as closed to all vehicles following the landslide.

“Police will record the lorry driver’s statement to assist investigations under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

The couple were reported to have been travelling to Kuala Krai to collect fruit supplies from their home in Ajil when the incident occurred.
