Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for counterterrorism efforts in West Africa and the Sahel, stressing the need for a comprehensive security and development approach.

Abdelatty made the remarks during talks on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, with Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Traore on strengthening bilateral relations and regional issues of mutual concern.

He highlighted the potential role of the Aswan Forum for Peace and Development in the Sahel and expressed Egypt’s interest in closer coordination with Sahel countries.

The two ministers discussed efforts to promote regional stability and security, particularly under Burkina Faso’s presidency of the Alliance of Sahel States. Abdelatty invited Traore to attend the sixth Aswan Forum for Peace and Sustainable Development in November.

Abdelatty praised the growing momentum in Egyptian-Burkinabe ties and called for stronger trade, economic and investment cooperation, particularly in energy, infrastructure, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, in line with the political consultation agreement signed in July 2025.

He expressed hope that the Egyptian-Burkinabe Business Forum, held alongside Traore’s visit, would produce tangible results to boost trade and investment.

He also stressed the importance of security and military cooperation and capacity-building programs provided by Egyptian institutions and Al-Azhar Al-Sharif.

Traore, for his part, praised the growing Egyptian-Burkinabe partnership and stressed the importance of continued high-level exchanges and cooperation in counterterrorism, training and capacity building.

He expressed Burkina Faso’s interest in expanding cooperation and benefiting from Egypt’s expertise and capabilities to strengthen the country’s national institutions.
