Daredevil: Born Again’s Cancelation Can Start A New Era

Marvel Studios has decided to call it quits on Daredevil: Born Again after three seasons, but the news could signal an exciting new era for Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney+ has been home to new adventures with the Devil of Hell's Kitchen since 2025, when the MCU officially revived Daredevil after three seasons on Netflix.

Daredevil: Born Again has already spent two seasons expanding the feud between Matt and Wilson Fisk, bringing back several key characters from the Defenders-verse, like Bullseye, Punisher, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. Daredevil: Born Again season 3 will continue the story, which brings Iron Fist and Elektra back into the fold, too. The series' trajectory suggested Born Again could go well beyond three seasons.

That is not the fate that Marvel had in mind, though. It's been confirmed that Daredevil: Born Again will not return for season 4, making season 3 the end of the Disney+ series. The news came with a surprising development that showrunner Dario Scardapane had departed during post-production. Additional reports note that the cast was informed of Marvel's decision recently, suggesting Born Again season 4 was under consideration before.

The cancelation of Born Again has already elicited some strong, sad reactions from fans. The show and its characters are beloved, and now the latter have uncertain futures. However, the decision may not be all bad. With Daredevil: Born Again set to end next year with season 3, a new era for Daredevil and friends on the big screen can begin.

Marvel Studios Can Make Daredevil A Movie-Level Character Now

Marvel's decision to end Daredevil: Born Again should not be seen as a sign that the MCU no longer has plans for Daredevil. The franchise has been very interested in him for the last five years, dating back to Cox's return for a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which came in conjunction with Vincent D'Onofrio's return in Hawkeye.

Now that Born Again is ending, the MCU has more freedom to use Daredevil elsewhere, including in movies. Cox's schedule will no longer be tied up with an ongoing series that he must film throughout the year, nor will Marvel need to refrain from interjecting additional Daredevil stories into what the show was doing. Daredevil will now have the opportunity to become a movie-level character for the MCU.

That's why it would be a real surprise if Born Again season 3 is the final MCU appearance for Daredevil. Marvel has invested a lot of time, money, and energy into building him up and getting him ready for a bigger role. Viewers have spent more than a decade following Cox's character on the small screen across two different solo series and a crossover event. Marvel could have kept this going, so the cancelation makes the most sense if it is meant to help transition Daredevil to the big screen.

Daredevil's Movie Future Holds Great Potential For The MCU

If putting Daredevil in more MCU movies is Marvel Studios' endgame, there are many promising routes the character can go. The biggest would be developing a solo Daredevil movie. There are plenty of grander stories involving the blind lawyer that the MCU can tell that would benefit from the larger scope movies provide.

Even if Cox doesn't get the chance to headline a solo franchise, he has immediate potential for major crossovers. The most requested of the bunch is seeing Daredevil and Spider-Man in a proper team-up. Spider-Man 5 could finally do it, possibly even having them work together to take on Kingpin, fulfilling multiple fan dreams at once.

Daredevil could even go on to join the Avengers after Daredevil: Born Again is over. Perhaps the MCU will even have him front and center in a New York-centric street-level event film, one that brings Daredevil, Spider-Man, the New Avengers/Thunderbolts, and others together. All this is possible with the character's Disney+ era ending.
