Firefly Wedding Episode 1 Review: Crunchyroll's Next Fall 2026 Sleeper Hit Anime Is Gruesome & Addictive

One of the key advantages Crunchyroll has as a dedicated anime streaming service is in just how much of an event each new season's slate of shows can be. It'll inevitably have the major tentpole events drawing in the usual suspects like Black Clover season 2, while also introducing plucky new contenders to scratch the itch left by Solo Leveling's long wait before its next installment. But loaded lineups like that for Fall 2026 will almost certainly produce new gems alongside consistently strong shows like The Apothecary Diaries, and for shojo fans in particular, Firefly Wedding comes in strong for its first episode.
Firefly Wedding is an overall new series originating from the eponymous 2023 manga written and illustrated by Oreco Tachibana. Its premise is approachable enough, about a noblewoman named Satoko Kirigaya whose heart condition is seen as a liability in a world where women like her are traded like property, yet her supportive father doesn't believe in her grim prognosis, wishing only for her to find happiness and a husband. In the story's Meiji-era setting, Satoko's fate seemed entirely dictated by strategic marriage stripping women like her of their agency. But with ScreenRant being provided a review screener for Firefly Wedding episode 1, Satoko's choice upends her fate in spectacular fashion.
Firefly Wedding Descends From Doldrums To Desperation In Series Premiere
Satoko's predicament in Firefly Wedding is a familiar one: she's privileged, beautiful, yet seen as a risky marriage prospect because her health likely means a shorter lifespan. Everything she does in these opening minutes are a testament to her gentleness and love for her father in particular, growing flowers to harvest as gifts for family. Yet, her predicament does not in any way protect her from cruelty, whether by her taunting stepsister or by mysterious kidnappers intent on deflowering her while in captivity before she is killed. This sort of callous family behavior isn't new even in recent shojo anime, with the Saimori family in My Happy Marriage.
But upon Satoko being kidnapped and going into the latter half, her problem-solving takes some interesting paths once she's placed behind bars by lecherous mercenaries. She soon comes face-to-face with Firefly Wedding's male lead in this instance, Shinpei Goto, a paid assassin tasked with executing her later that evening. Coated in blood and eager to spill more, Shinpei may surprise some viewers with his earnest desire for love and companionship. It's this same humanizing component that gives Satoko the opening she needs, pledging herself as a marital partner to get out alive, while setting up a fun variation on a classic shojo anime trope.
Shojo Fans May Have Their New Yandere Fixation In Firefly Wedding
While it's easy to veer into trope-laden territory when it comes to romantic shojo anime pairings, the intensity of Shinpei Goto makes him a compelling male lead introduced in Firefly Wedding episode 1. Rather than male tsundere archetypes like Tomoe from Kamisama Kiss, or kuudere like Odanna from Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, Shinpei exhibits strong yandere qualities, showing his extremely violent side upfront, with his capacity for love and devotion concealed and caked in dried blood. It can't be overstated that there's no moment in which Shinpei isn't seen covered in the blood of his opponents, seemingly contractually bound to only kill when necessary, but taking glee at every opportunity for violence.
Shinpei is obvious "hear me out" social media fodder, as despite his uncannily sharp grins and empty stare, his intensity and character design are overall surprisingly alluring. This is hardly news for fans of shojo anime in general, and Shinpei isn't even the biggest "hear me out" of the episode (that'd be Jubei Kirigaya, Satoko's father, to get ahead of the curve.) But Shinpei will inevitably make the rounds among the fandom for embodying not just the Hitman with a Heart trope for seeing Satoko's promised companionship and wanting it to be real, but also the Magic Contract Comes with a Kiss concept straight from TV Tropes. It's Tomoe and Odanna all over again, sans the fantasy and with way more dismemberment.
For the most part, Shinpei gets plenty of love and atmosphere for each scene featuring him, his entrance bathed in red hues. The tone immediately shifts into one loaded with peril as Satoko sees a real-time challenge to the reasoning behind her escape attempt. It doesn't take long at all for Shinpei to unleash multiple whirlwinds of violence and gore, needing little more reason to kill his fellow man. These scenes can be fun, but these traits also lack overall depth for his motivations, at least for now, while the first villains of the anime are cheaply underwritten with little more driving purpose by the end other than sexual violence against Sakoto.
Firefly Wedding's Visuals Indicate Strong Potential For New Viewers
Beyond the writing and execution of antagonistic step-siblings and ravenous mercenaries coming off ham-fisted, the production behind Firefly Wedding is rather strong at multiple points in its first episode. Sakoto's characterization is subtle at first, her gentle, yet firm personality conveyed well as she stands with poise and grace even against the taunts of her vicious stepsister, Miwako. She even shows a menacing side of her own while standing up to Miwako, foreshadowing her interesting, twisted compatibility with Shinpei by matching wavelengths of his intensity.
Animation-wise, though, Firefly Wedding isn't quite as strong as the best contenders from Fall 2026, with Takahiro Kamei's direction showing its greater strengths in shot composition and strong use of color motifs. Passing shots occasionally show weaker renditions of even star characters, but at its best, Firefly Wedding is quite pleasing to look at. It sets the stage to meet its potential further as Satoko must face the consequences of partnering with such a volatile individual, and the action sequences, as well as each character's moments of intensity, make for an intoxicating premise worth catching each week.
