News24 | UPDATE | Former Knysna mayor shot dead

Former Knysna mayor and ANC councillor Aubrey Tsengwa was shot dead on Wednesday night.

News24 understands that Tsengwa was shot while on his way home on Wednesday.

The unidentified gunmen fled from the scene.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting and the possible motive were not immediately known.

ANC Western Cape spokesperson Sifiso Mtsweni confirmed Tsengwa’s death to News24 but said the party was still awaiting details from his family.

Tsengwa was a sitting ANC councillor for Ward 8 before his resignation from the council in March 2025.

His tenure as the mayor from August 2022 was marred by significant political instability, including changes in the municipality’s political leadership.

He was removed as the mayor in February 2025 after a motion of no confidence.
