Weather report South Africa: thunderstorms Monday

Monday, 28 September’s Weather Report shows a mix of conditions across the country.

Severe thunderstorms are expected in the north-east, while it stays fine and cooler further south and west.

SAWS has warned that severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds will hit the Highveld areas of Mpumalanga, the south-western parts of Limpopo, and Gauteng today.

Hail and excessive lightning are both possible.

Gauteng will be partly cloudy and warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers. It will be hot in the extreme north.

The UVB sunburn index is “high” today.

WHERE TODAY’S THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS IN FORCE

Mpumalanga will see morning fog along the escarpment.

Otherwise, it stays cloudy and cool to cold, with isolated showers and thundershowers, scattered over the Highveld.

Limpopo will see morning fog along the escarpment too.

Otherwise, it turns partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers, scattered in the extreme south.

It will be cloudy in the east.

North West will be fine and warm to hot, becoming partly cloudy in the east with isolated showers and thundershowers.

The Free State will be partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the east, where it turns cloudy.

WHY A SEPARATE FIRE WARNING IS ALSO IN FORCE TODAY

According to SAWS, dangerous fire conditions could occur in Limpopo Valley, as well as the central and bushveld regions of Limpopo.

The same conditions are also likely in North West’s Moses Kotane Local Municipality.

The Northern Cape will be partly cloudy in the south-east in the morning, otherwise fine, windy and cool to warm, but hot along the northern coast.

Coastal winds will be moderate southerly to south-easterly, becoming fresh to strong in the afternoon.

The Western Cape will be partly cloudy in the east, where it turns cold in places, otherwise fine and cool but warm over the West Coast District.

Coastal winds will be light and variable along the south coast in the morning, otherwise moderate south-easterly to easterly, but strong to near gale-force along the south-west coast.

The UVB sunburn index here is “very high” today.

The western half of the Eastern Cape will be cloudy and cold to cool, with a chance of light rain in places along the coast, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon.

The eastern half will be cloudy and cold to cool too, with isolated showers and rain in the extreme east.

KwaZulu-Natal will see morning fog in the south-west, otherwise cloudy and cold to cool, with scattered showers and thundershowers, isolated in the south.

The UVB sunburn index here is “low” today.

This is a genuinely mixed picture today, severe storms building in the north-east, while the south and west stay cooler and calmer.
