Murkomen Announces Government To Supply National Police Service With 2,232 New Vehicles in 3 Months

The National Police Service is set to acquire 2,232 new vehicles over the next three months as part of an aggressive fleet overhaul aimed at solving historical mobility constraints within the security sector, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced.

Speaking on Friday, September 18, 2026, during the General Service Unit (GSU) recruits passing-out parade at Embakasi in Nairobi, Murkomen outlined ongoing structural reforms across the ministry. He disclosed that 1,175 old service vehicles were replaced over the past year, adding that an additional 1,200 electric vehicles are scheduled for delivery by the end of the year in accordance with executive directives.

Community Policing and Institutional Reforms

Highlighting changes in security administration, the Cabinet Secretary emphasized a shift toward bottom-up security management through the institutionalized Jukwaa la Usalama framework. Developed following nationwide county consultative tours, the initiative mandates County Security Committees to actively involve local community stakeholders—including boda boda operators, religious leaders, business groups, youth representatives, and university students—in localized crime prevention.

Murkomen further revealed that the government has overhauled its narcotics enforcement strategy, transforming the former anti-narcotics unit into a expanded National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau following directives from President William Ruto. The revitalized bureau has been reinforced with 208 newly recruited specialized officers alongside dedicated operational transport to bolster the national crackdown on illicit drugs and alcohol.
