Tomorrow, Jakarta to turn off lights for 60 minutes for Ozone Day

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government will turn off lights along several main roads and at various city landmarks on Saturday (September 19, 2026) from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time as a part of marking the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, or Ozone Day.

Head of the Jakarta Environment Office Dudi Gardesi said in an official statement here on Friday that the lights would be turned off at the National Monument (Monas), the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Selamat Datang Statue at the Hotel Indonesia Square, the Pahlawan Statue, the Jenderal Sudirman Statue, and the Jakarta City Hall area.

He said the action would serve as a reminder that environmental awareness can begin with simple habits, including using electricity wisely.

"Everyone can play a role, whether at home, in the workplace, or at their place of business. Simple steps taken together and consistently will bring greater benefits," Gardesi said.

He explained that a similar action was carried out on June 13, 2026, to commemorate World Environment Day, resulting in electricity savings of 75.18 MWh, with a cost efficiency of Rp108,693,752.

The action also resulted in an estimated emissions reduction of 60.14 tons of CO2 equivalent.

According to Gardesi, the achievement showed that participation from the government, building managers, business operators, and the public could generate measurable energy savings.

The Jakarta Provincial Government expressed hope that the spirit of togetherness will continue to grow and become part of residents' daily lives.

Gardesi stressed that support from the public, building managers, and business operators is essential to the initiative.

"Let's make it a habit to turn off lights and electronic equipment when they are not in use. By using energy according to our needs, we can save costs while also helping protect Jakarta's environment," he said.
