As CBS' massive hit Tracker gears up for its fourth season, the series has announced a massive casting upgrade that could hold the key to a secret that Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) has yet to unlock. Throughout the past few seasons, Tracker has moved from a series with a ton of potential to a juggernaut that delivers week after week. Despite the fact that the series has had hiccups as it moved through its first years, Tracker has been able to establish its universe and created a sprawling mystery surrounding Colter's personal life that features a mix of interesting characters.

After cast shakeups that have shifted Tracker's makeup over the course of its run, Reenie Greene (Finoa Rene) has been one of the only consistent characters in Colter's life, and her world has been more fleshed out as the series has advanced. Throughout Tracker season 3, the series seemed to finally find a balance between Colter and Reenie's stories, both together and apart, which included bringing new characters into the fold to flesh out her professional life. With Colter's tech guru Randy (Chris Lee) working with Reenie, Tracker also introduced Cassady McClincy Zhang as Melanie "Mel" Day, Reenie's quirky new assistant.

Mel was quick to be fascinated with Colter, and while her tragic backstory hasn't been entirely revealed, it quickly became clear that she knew more about Tracker's lead than many expected. With Tracker season 4 coming and Zhang upped to a series regular, the character could unlock a major mystery.

Although Tracker season 4 is just weeks away, the CBS series announced that a casting change is coming for the upcoming season with Zhang, who plays Reenie's assistant Mel, upgraded to a series regular. After recurring throughout Tracker season 3, Zhang joins Lee as characters on the series who have gone from recurring to regular over the course of the past few years. While this may not mean much by way of advancing Mel's story specifically, the fact that the series wants to feature Zhang's character more consistently opens some interesting doors for what Tracker season 4 plans to do.

With Tracker season 3 having ended on a note that finally wrapped up a season's long mystery for Colter, revealing more about his late father's death and what led up to it, the series opened an even bigger can of worms before it closed. Colter's brother, Russell (Jensen Ackles), discovered something intense about his little brother's past and went off to investigate, leaving Colter behind without warning. While Reenie is involved through Russell, who asked her to vouch for his potentially extended absence, it's possible Mel could be another piece to the puzzle that Tracker viewers won't exactly see coming.

Viewers Originally Wary Of Mel's Interest In Colter May Finally Get Their Answers

Early on during Tracker season 3 as viewers got to know Mel, many were wary of her character and just how intensely interested she was in Colter. It appeared that a big part of why she was on her own personal path was because of Colter, whose work she was fascinated with, which left some viewers concerned that she was more obsessive (and dangerous) than it made sense to be. When it was revealed that Mel suffered a deep personal tragedy in her younger years, it became clear that her interest in Colter as an investigator wasn't all that strange.

Question 1 of 3

Despite the fact that Mel's backstory was uncovered, it's possible that bringing her character into the foreground could have more to do with the mystery of Colter's past than anticipated. With details still left to uncover and a massive mystery winding around Colter's youth, Mel could be a huge part of what's to come in Tracker season 4. Tracker has been known to bring its ancillary characters into the larger mystery of the series to root it while Colter moves from place to place, so Zhang's promotion could mean her character is set to take a on much bigger role.
