Man dies after falling into open drainage canal in Angeles City
MABALACAT CITY, Pampanga — A man died after falling into a flooded, open drainage canal along the Fil-Am Friendship Highway in Barangay Cutcut, Angeles City, on Aug. 28.
Closed-circuit television footage circulating on social media showed the man, identified by the Angeles City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ACDRRMO) as Reiner Novero, walking along the highway sidewalk while carrying an umbrella at 2:04 p.m.
He fell into the open drainage canal and was swept away by the strong current.

Two men who witnessed the incident attempted to rescue him but were unable to due to the swift-moving floodwaters.
The ACDRRMO and city police immediately launched a search and rescue operation. After more than an hour, responders recovered Novero about 2 kilometers from where he fell, beneath a bridge in front of a subdivision in Barangay Sto. Domingo.
Novero was brought to the Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center, where he was declared dead.
The incident prompted concern among social media users over the safety of open drainage systems during flooding and heavy rains, particularly the risks posed by uncovered canals along roads and pedestrian areas. /mcm
