Former Chief Justice David Maraga has announced the death of his sister, Sabina Kemunto Otiambo, mourning her as a matriarch of extraordinary strength and warmth whose legacy touched multiple generations.

Maraga shared the news on his X account on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, confirming that Sabina passed away at the age of 107. She was the widow of the late Raphael Otiambo Nyangena.

“It is with heavy hearts, but endless gratitude for a life richly lived, that we share the passing of our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mrs. Sabina Kemunto Otiambo,” Maraga stated.

Describing her as a pillar of strength to the family, Maraga noted her remarkable age and influence. Sabina is survived by her brothers—the former Chief Justice and James Ochengo—having been predeceased by siblings Onduko, Ongondi, Barake, Nyanduko, Okongo, and Kemuma.

She leaves behind six surviving children: Grace Moraa Ochoi, David Nyangau, Simon Monari, Eunice Kemuma, Job Miranga, and Florence Nyanchama. Two of her sons, Peterson Nyambane and Kamanda, passed away earlier. Across her extensive lineage, her direct descendants include 53 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
