The two accused in the murder of boxer Zolani Tete have been denied bail.

Uzuzole Goqwana, 22, and Sinebhongo Qase, 28, appeared in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Friday for judgment in their bail application.

Magistrate Anton Pretorius said the applicants had failed to satisfy the court that it was in the interest of justice to release them on bail.

Pretorius said the accused were likely to evade trial if released on bail, given the seriousness of the offence they are facing.

He also stated that mob justice was prevalent in the Mdantsane area and that releasing the accused on bail would likely lead to anger among community members.

Pretorius said evidence before the court suggested that Tete was a “hero” for many people in Mdantsane and that they were angered by his murder.

This is a developing story.
