Paul Wesley Teases “Very Serious” Final Season Of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds & Big Twist For Kirk: “People Are Going To Be Shocked”

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4

Paul Wesley hints that James T. Kirk and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will take a serious turn in the prequel's fifth and final season, which premieres on Paramount+ in 2027.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 is warping full speed ahead as Kirk's evolves into the Captain of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series. Speaking exclusively to ScreenRant, Wesley talked about the "magic" on set when he fully became Captain Kirk and united with his full Enterprise crew, including Hikaru Sulu (Kai Murakami) and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Thomas Jane).

Speaking to TV Line about the Kirk-centric Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 8, "Orders of Magnitude," Paul Wesley looked ahead to the show's "much more serious" fifth and final season. Hinting at a "huge" twist coming for Jim Kirk, Paul promises that "people are going to be shocked." Read Wesley's quote below:

Paul Wesley: “There's going to be several events that occur. It's a much more serious season. It's very, very serious. It's very contained. We only have six episodes, so it's not like you're going to be doing these sort of fantastical, imaginative [stories]. It's very much like: This is the conclusion. This is the final chapter. And also, Kirk goes through something very important that allows us to understand why he is who he is. I can't possibly say what it is, because it's such a huge thing. But just suffice it to say that... people are going to be shocked.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 has careened from gimmick episode to gimmick episode. However, the occasional, more 'traditional' episodes of season 4 have been among the strongest, including "Orders of Magnitude," where First Officer Kirk's morality is tested by the rogue Starfleet Admiral Simon Reeger (Joe Morton), who is willing to kill thousands for his mission of revenge.

Wesley previewing a more "serious" season 5 that won't be as "fantastical" hints that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is leaving 'big swings' behind to tell a "very contained" story. This lines up with what co-showrunner and executive producer Akiva Goldsman told ScreenRant, that Strange New Worlds season 5 would feel more like "a suite of episodes" instead of stand-alones bouncing around in different genres.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' series finale with Captain Kirk launching the Starship Enterprise's next five-year mission is also a bridge to a proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Year One. However, Paramount Skydance seems intent on taking Star Trek in a new direction. Despite the cast and crew standing at the ready if Paramount+ gives the Kirk spinoff a green light, Wesley told ScreenRant, "I don't know if Year One is ever gonna happen."

Paul Wesley as Captain Kirk will also be featured in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4's finale, "Tomorrow's Enterprise." The season 4 sizzle reel debuted at San Diego Comic-Con ends with Wesley commanding the Enterprise as Captain Kirk.

It sounds like James Kirk must overcome his biggest challenge yet in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5 before he can earn the right to be called the Captain of the Enterprise.
