Indonesia strengthen maritime cooperation with China

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago said Indonesia will continue to promote stronger cooperation with China in the maritime sector as a priority area of the bilateral partnerships.

“In the maritime sector, Indonesia sees broad opportunities to strengthen positive cooperation with China,” Djamari said at the celebration of China's 77th National Day in Jakarta on Tuesday evening.

According to Djamari, as the world's largest archipelagic country, Indonesia has a strong interest in ensuring a maritime region that is safe, peaceful, stable, and supportive of cooperation and sustainable development.

Djamari underscored that the maritime sector is one of the five main pillars of the Indonesia-China partnership, alongside politics, economy, people-to-people relations, and security.

In this regard, Indonesia will continue building maritime connectivity while taking joint steps to address increasingly complex challenges ahead.

"Maritime cooperation must continuously be directed toward strengthening maritime safety and security, connectivity, marine environmental protection, and blue economy development,” he said.

According to the minister, Indonesia’s maritime cooperation with China plays a crucial role in maintaining regional peace and stability.

He expressed hope that the partnership will continue to contribute positively to creating a peaceful, stable, inclusive, and prosperous region.

Djamari emphasized that cooperation in the sector must remain grounded in respect for the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, equality, mutual benefit, and non-interference in internal affairs.

In his remarks, the minister also underscored that Indonesia is strengthening its security partnership with China through concrete cooperation aimed at building mutual trust between the two countries.

“Indonesia will continue to promote stronger cooperation in law enforcement, information sharing, capacity building, as well as the prevention and eradication of transnational crime,” he said.

He further noted that other defense and security sectors to be strengthened with China include cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and joint coordination to address non-traditional security challenges.
