The window to express interest in hosting the Olympic Games in 2036 slammed shut on October 31, with India among seven countries eager to stage the quadrennial showpiece.

The International Olympic Committee announced a list of seven nations that have been given No Objection Certificates.

Countries who have submitted their interest in staging the 2036 Olympics:

  • India
  • Germany
  • Hungary
  • Qatar
  • Republic of Korea
  • Türkiye
  • South Africa

“This will be the first edition of the Olympic Games to be elected under the Fit for the Future changes,” IOC Member Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, Chair of the IOC’s Future Host Commission for the Games of the Olympiad, said.

The seven contenders will now be assessed on a number of technical factors, such as venue masterplan and athlete experience, funding strategy, political and public support, Games delivery capabilities, and legacy strategy to create long-term benefits for host communities.

They will also be evaluated on strategic elements such as their vision for the Games and their alignment with both local development plans and the goals of the Olympic Movement.

“The strong interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics shows that countries across the world recognise the enduring social and economic value the Games can have for local communities. We will continue to work closely with all seven Interested Parties to support them in developing their projects,” Grabar-Kitarović added.

The next steps:

November 2026: Virtual presentations by the interested parties to the Future Host Commission. The commission will carry out site visits to the proposed host regions and produce a report for the EB.
