BUKIT MERTAJAM, Nov 8 — Heavy rain yesterday evening has caused flooding in several areas in Central Seberang Perai, while two separate incidents involving fallen trees damaged vehicles and part of a building structure in the district.

The Central Seberang Perai District Disaster Management Committee secretariat said the affected areas included Seberang Jaya, Permatang Rawa, Tanah Liat, Mengkuang Titi and Jalan Baru, following heavy rain that began at about 4.30pm.

It said several homes were also affected by rising water, while drainage problems were reported around Seberang Jaya, although the situation remained under control.

“At 7.30pm, we received reports of rising water levels in Mengkuang Titi, and the relevant agencies immediately continued monitoring the situation and liaising with the local community.

“The Social Welfare Department is also on standby in the event that residents need to be evacuated,” it said in a statement last night.

However, based on reports as of 8pm, no temporary relief centres (PPS) had been opened, while periodic monitoring continued in flood-prone areas in the event of prolonged heavy rain.

Meanwhile, Penang Fire and Rescue Department Operations Division Assistant Director John Sagun Francis said two incidents involving fallen trees were reported in Perai and Mengkuang Titi yesterday evening, but no casualties were reported.

He said that in an incident near Desa Sutera Square, Perai, a tree fell onto a Proton Saga taxi parked in the area and damaged a small section of the roof structure of a nearby shop.

He said the department received a distress call at 6.01 pm before deploying seven personnel from the Perai Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by personnel from the Bandar Perda station, to the scene.

“Tree-cutting and clearance work was carried out at the scene with assistance from the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), before the operation ended at 7.57pm,” he said.

In a separate incident in Mengkuang Titi, Kubang Semang, John said a tree fell onto a Perodua Bezza and part of a house.

He said six personnel from the Penanti Fire and Rescue Station were deployed to the scene after receiving a call at 6.01pm to carry out tree-cutting and clearance work.

He said the scene was subsequently handed over to the house owner after checks confirmed that there were no further hazards, before the operation ended at 6.48 pm. — Bernama
