2027: PDP names Niger governorship candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State has adopted Mohammed Nami as its candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The development followed the decision of other aspirants within the party to step down and support Mr Nami, in what the party described as a demonstration of confidence in his leadership capacity.
The state PDP chairman, Aliyu Halidu, who confirmed the development, described Mr Nami as a man of integrity, honour and proven leadership qualities.
Mr Halidu said the decision by the other aspirants to withdraw from the race in favour of Mr Nami was an indication that they trusted his ability to provide effective leadership and govern the state.
According to him, Mr Nami understands his strengths and possesses the experience and skills required to provide purposeful leadership to the people of Niger State.
The chairman expressed confidence that the emergence of Mr Nami would strengthen the party and position it to mount a strong challenge in the 2027 governorship election.
Mr Halidu also expressed optimism about the PDP’s prospects in the election, saying the party still enjoys considerable support across the country.
He said his interactions with communities and residents across Niger State had shown that many people remained sympathetic to the PDP and were willing to support the party in the next election.
The chairman said the party’s renewed unity would enable it to reconnect with voters, strengthen its structures and present a formidable challenge for the governorship seat in 2027.

The PDP has governed Niger State at different periods since the return to democratic rule in 1999.
The party held the governorship of the state for 16 years through Abdulkadir Kure from 1999 to 2007 and Babangida Aliyu from 2007 and 2015.
Since 2015, however, the party has remained in opposition in Niger State, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) controlling the state government.
The 2027 governorship election is therefore expected to be a major contest as the PDP seeks to regain control of the state.
