Indonesia, UNFCCC boost climate cooperation in Asia-Pacific via REDD+

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian government and the UNFCCC Secretariat are pushing to strengthen cooperation on forest governance and climate financing across the Asia-Pacific region through the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) initiative.

"REDD+ plays a crucial role not only in strengthening global climate governance, but also in bolstering our national forest management," Senior Advisor to the Minister of Forestry on Climate Change, Haruni Krisnawati, said in a statement here in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The commitment to stronger collaboration is reflected at the "REDD+ Community of Practice Regional Meeting for Asia-Pacific Countries" runs in Bali from October 12 to 15, 2026.

Haruni noted the forum draws experts, government officials, and forestry practitioners from across Asia-Pacific to exchange hands-on experiences, review progress, and devise strategies to curb deforestation and forest degradation.

"It is an honor to continue protecting and sustainably managing our forests. This meeting provides a valuable opportunity to learn from each other's diverse approaches, strengthen professional networks, and explore new opportunities for collaboration," she explained.

Meanwhile, Team Lead for Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) at the UNFCCC Secretariat, Dirk Nemitz, noted the Bali meeting is designed to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and technical expertise among Asia-Pacific countries on the implementation of REDD+.

It also aims to address the increasingly complex funding and governance landscape surrounding REDD+ following the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Nemitz underscored the ultimate outcome and sustainability of the forum depend heavily on the active participation of attendees to drive concrete implementation.

The Bali forum discusses various strategic issues, including a 10-year review of REDD+ implementation, the harmonization of reporting and results-based finance, as well as strengthening safeguards and synergies among the Rio Conventions.

It also features a field visit to the Mangrove Arboretum, the Mangrove Information Center, and the Wantilan Mangrove Nursery in Bali to observe best practices in coastal ecosystem restoration.
