Harvey Elliott: Liverpool confirm first Deadline Day deal as forgotten star leaves on loan again

The 23-year-old signed for the Reds in 2019, but has not made a first-team appearance since the early days of the 2025/26 campaign, before joining Aston Villa on loan.

Elliott’s season in Birmingham did not go at all to plan. He started only one Premier League match and Villa attempted to cancel his loan in January, but could not reach an agreement with Liverpool. He did, however, return to Liverpool with a Europa League winners’ medal.

Despite featuring regularly in Liverpool’s pre-season campaign, Elliott has not been named in the matchday squad for either of Andoni Iraola’s first two league fixtures and it has now been confirmed he will spend the remainder of the season with Valencia, who finished ninth in La Liga last season.

He is thought to have moved on a straight loan, with no option or obligation to buy included in the terms. Liverpool are said to be covering a portion of his wages.

“This is an incredible club. I'm really thankful for the opportunity,” said Elliott on arrival in Spain. “I'm going to give everything I have for Valencia.”

Elliott remains under contract at Liverpool until 2028, but it remains to be seen whether he will play a prominent role in the first team after spending consecutive seasons away from Anfield.

It has been a quiet Deadline Day for Liverpool, who landed their headline summer signing on Monday as they confirmed the arrival of France and Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola in a nine-figure deal.

Elliott will hope to make his debut this Sunday as Barcelona visit the Mestalla. Valencia remain in the hunt for their first win of the season, though, and are languishing in 16th place after taking just the one point from their opening three fixtures.
