#SHOWBIZ: Local Tamil crime thriller 'Irumbuth Thottam' to make Aussie debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Tamil cinema is set to reach new heights abroad as debutant director Jaydev Jayakumar's crime thriller, 'Irumbuth Thottam' ('Ladang Besi'), prepares to make its big-screen debut across Australia this month.

Brought to Australian shores through a collaboration with the Melbourne Malaysian Indian Cultural Club (MMICC), the 114-minute feature produced by AVLT Production and Jegen John Peter marks a significant leap forward in bringing local stories to an international audience.

Set against the rustic backdrop of Sri Tebong in Melaka, the gripping procedural drama follows a police force racing against time to solve the tragic murder of a 15-year-old schoolgirl.

The dark investigation gradually unearths a web of long-hidden family secrets and buried truths.

Speaking on the milestone release, director Jaydev expressed immense pride in taking a project so deeply rooted in his upbringing to overseas cinema halls.

"This film is very close to my heart because it was made in my hometown with the support and involvement of the local community. The opportunity to bring this film to audiences in Australia is a meaningful achievement for everyone involved," he said to Bernama.

Jaydev added that the venture highlighted how homegrown filmmakers possessed the creative muscle to craft deeply localised narratives that can captivate audiences far beyond Malaysian borders.

Filmed entirely on location in Tebong, Melaka, the production was a true community effort, with more than 50 local villagers joining the effort as supporting cast members and background extras.

Presented in a blend of Tamil and Malay, 'Irumbuth Thottam' features a strong ensemble cast comprising Irfan Zaini, Logavarman Stideran, Marie Dashani Matthews, Mohana Raj, Dhurgaashini S. Vijyan and Vino Shan.
