TMZ reported on Thursday that that voice actor Mike McFarland has died on Wednesday. The website states that it received the news from McFarland's fellow voice actress and co-organizer of a crowdfunding campaign to help him, Brina Palencia. Express also reported that McFarland had died, stating that a representative confirmed the news. He was 56.

McFarland underwent brain surgery to remove his tumor in January 2025. He was then diagnosed with glioblastoma in August that same year, a brain cancer that originates as a growth of cells in the brain or spinal cord.

Voice actors J. Michael Tatum and Brandon McInnis launched a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign in January 2025 so McFarland could hire a live-in medical assistant, following his brain surgery that month. The campaign surpassed its initial US$65,000 goal as well as its updated goals. As of press time, the campaign has paused donations.

Voice actress Colleen Clinkenbeard said that McFarland found about the tumor when he visited the doctor for what he thought was an inner ear infection, later discovering that it was a brain tumor. McFarland had a second brain surgery in April 2025 to try and locate an unknown infection.

After attempting assisted living, McFarland was again in the hospital and was moved to a skilled nursing facility to continue treatment. His GoFundMe campaign had been updated in August 2025 with a new goal for covering his treatment costs. As of writing, McFarland's GoFundMe has reached US$301,786 of its US$350,000 goal, but donations have been currently paused.

McFarland worked as line producer, ADR Director, and ADR script adapter for many ADV and later Funimation series including Case Closed, Dragon Ball Z, Eden of the East, Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, One Piece, and the Evangelion film series.

His voice acting credits include Master Roshi and Yajirobe in Dragon Ball and its sequels, Makoto Hyuga in the Evangelion film series, Sky Master in Heaven's Lost Property, Goemon Ishikawa in Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and many Lupin III films, Jean in Attack on Titan, George in Case Closed, and Buggy in One Piece. Some of his more recent roles include protagonist Hiroshi Odokawa in Odd Taxi, Big Bad Wolf in Date A Live IV, and E.G. Mine in Trigun Stampede.
