Steam is such an enormous platform at this point that it can actually be quite hard to find the games that really fit who you are as a player, beyond the obvious AAA titles. That said, the flip side of that coin is that it has a spectacular number of options for just about every taste, from fast-paced first-person shooters, to darling indie adventure games.

The best way to filter through all the choices to find the right game for you is to simply find a genre and look at the user reviews, to see which new arrivals are striking a chord with those who have played it. Now, one such game has been made entirely free for players, and it seems as though there are far worse options out there if you're looking for something to do this weekend.

Grim Siege 1 Saqred Games

Over on Steam, you should be able to find the store page for Grim Siege, a 1v1 dark-fantasy card duel game that first released back in September of this year. You can step into battles against the AI or other real-world players, fighting to deplete your opponent before they do the same to you.

In sharing a little about the game, the developer posted the following description:

"Raise your own tower to the skies — or crush your enemy's into dust. Every turn is a choice between defense, growth, and merciless assault. Manage your income, hoard resources and decide where to invest — but beware inflation: you can't hoard forever. Tempo is king.

"Build a deck around your class and playstyle - from an impenetrable defense to a merciless rush. Hundreds of decisions, dozens of combinations. Stuff the enemy's deck with all sorts of junk, spam them with rot or madness, or simply bring brute force down on them."

The game also comes with six classes, whose playstyle should help to inform the strategy you take headed into each game. The game describes those as follows:

  • Siege Master - the benchmark besieger with no bonuses and no weaknesses
  • Plague Lord - rot and slow decay, but weak direct damage
  • Zealot Cultist - damages itself to boost the power of its attacks
  • Warlord - swift onslaught and the first strike
  • Architect - defense that turns into tower growth
  • Dusk Baron - a predator who robs the enemy blind

As mentioned previously, the game has just gone free-to-play forever, and almost everyone that has jumped into the game so far has been delighted with what they have seen.

Grim Siege 2 Saqred Games

"Came in for a couple of matches and ended up playing much longer than expected. Great dark fantasy atmosphere, fun class variety, and enough combos and counterplay to keep every match interesting. Definitely worth trying!" one review read.

While another added, "Very innovative and surprisingly polished indie card game, wish it went F2P sooner. Getting cards doesn't seem too hard and there is enough single-player content for it."

Grim Siege is available to download right now on Steam, entirely for free, so there isn't any risk associated with giving it a go for yourself. Who knows? You might end up playing something that really resonates.
